Understanding Eco-Psychology

an interview with Jorge Conesa-Sevilla

Jorge Conesa-Sevilla is an Associate Professor of Psychology at Northland College, Ashland Wisconsin. In addition to writing Ecological Outcome Psychological Theory and Ecopsychology as Ultimate Force Psychology: A Biosemiotic Approach to Nature Estrangement and Nature Alienation, he has published many articles in the areas of semiotics, ecopsychological biosemiotics, and environmental philosophy. In 1989 he received a B.A. (triple-special major–Whole Human) combining psychobiology, Eastern religion and biology from Humboldt State University in California. He received M.A. and Ph.D. degrees in experimental psychology from The University of Toledo, Ohio. He is a co-founder of the European Ecopsychology Society.

Sensory Awareness

an interview with Stefan Laeng-Gilliatt

Stefan Laeng-Gilliatt has studied Sensory Awareness and related practices since 1980, having studied and worked extensively with Charlotte Selver until her death in 2003. He was president and executive manager of the Sensory Awareness Foundation from 1995 through 2007.
Born and raised in Switzerland, he studied Meditation-Based Gestalt Therapy and Bioenergetic Analysis with Marcel Geisser and Gestalt Therapy with Seymour Carter and Walter Zünd. He has been a student of Buddhism since 1983, practicing and studying with teachers of different traditions.
Stefan offers workshops in the USA and Europe – see Mindfulness in Motion. Currently he is working on an Oral History and Book Project, documenting Charlotte Selver’s life. He also works with prison inmates in New Mexico as a member of the Heart Mountain Prison Project.

A Women Speaks the Truth

an interview with Jodie Evans

Jodie Evans has worked on behalf of community, social-justice, environmental, and political causes for more than thirty years. As Director of Administration in former California Governor Jerry Brown’s cabinet and staff, Jodie championed environmental causes, resulting in breakthroughs in wind and solar technology and worked to bring historic diversity into the staff and appointments. As Manager of Governor Brown’s 1992 Presidential Campaign, Jodie instituted a cap on financial contributions of $100, resulting in a stronger push for campaign finance standards. Jodie has traveled extensively on behalf of global peace. Since the start of the Iraq war, Jodie has traveled to Iraq, Afghanistan, Iran and Jordan on several occasions. She is the co-founder of CODEPINK for Peace, a women-initiated grassroots peace and social justice movement which has an international membership of 150,000.

The End of the Gender Wars

an interview with Stuart Sovatsky, PhD

Stuart Sovatsky, PhD received the only US Federal grant (1976) to bring yoga and Sanskrit chanting to incarcerated youth, was first in the US to introduce yoga (1978) to the homeless mentally-ill; convened the first International Prison Yoga Conference and is initiating co-convener of the forty-country World Congress on Psychology and Spirituality, 2008, in Delhi, India, with Robert Thurman, Stan Grof and BKS Iyengar. He has authored numerous books and poetic works and as a Kundalini Yoga Anahata Nad Chant-master has three CDs with Axis Mundi and has performed in the US, France, Germany, Russia and India. As a psychotherapist he specializes in marriage counselling and is director of the Kundalini Clinic and Blue Oak Berkeley Counseling. He is the co-president of the US Association for Transpersonal Psychology and was founding consultant to Green City Lofts the largest green-design complex in California.

Remembering the Ancestors

an interview with Martin Prechtel

Martin Prechtel is a thinker, writer and teacher whose work, both written and oral, hopes to promote the subtlety, irony and pre-modern vitality hidden in any living language. As a half blood Native American with a Pueblo Indian upbringing, his life took him from New Mexico to the village of Santiago Atitlan, Guatemala where he became a full village member of the Tzutujil Mayan population, and eventually served as a principal, responsible for instructing the young people in the meanings of their ancient stories through the rituals of adult rights of passage. Once again residing in his native New Mexico, Martín teaches at his international school Bolad’s Kitchen.

Evon Peter is the National Director of Native Movement Alaska and former Chief of the Neetsaii Gwich’in from Arctic Village in northeastern Alaska. He has served as the Co-Chair of the Gwich’in Council International and on the Executive Board of the Alaska Inter-Tribal Council. Evon is an advocate of Indigenous Peoples rights, youth, and a balanced world. His experience includes work within the United Nations and Arctic Council forum representing Indigenous and environmental interests. He is featured in the 2005 full-length feature film “Homeland: Four Portraits of Native Action,” that follows four Indigenous people working on issues of Environmental Justice in North America.

Richard Tarnas is a best selling author and the founding director of the graduate program in Philosophy, Cosmology, and Consciousness at the California Institute of Integral Studies in San Francisco, where he currently teaches. He also teaches on the faculty of the Pacifica Graduate Institute in Santa Barbara, and gives many public lectures and workshops in the U.S. and abroad. His book Cosmos and Psyche addresses the crisis of the modern self and modern world view, and then introduces a body of evidence, a method of inquiry, and an emerging cosmological perspective he believes could help creatively engage that crisis, and our history itself, within a new horizon of possibility.

The Earth Treasure Vase Mandala

an interview with Cynthia Jurs

Cynthia Jurs is an authorized Buddhist teacher (dharmacharya) who has practiced in the Tibetan Vajrayana and Zen Buddhist traditions for almost 30 years. In 1994 she received formal transmission from Zen master Thich Nhat Hanh to teach engaged Buddhism and now directs the Open Way Sangha in Santa Fe, New Mexico, teaching an approach to living in awareness through practice, ceremony, retreat, and pilgrimage. Cynthia also teaches meditation to environmental activists at the Center for Whole Communities in Vermont. In 1990 she met Charok Rinpoche, a 106-year-old lama living in a cave in Nepal, and received a Tibetan practice to bring healing and protection to the Earth. The practice involves filling earth treasure vases and burying them in places of need around the world. As a filmmaker, she recently directed and produced the film, Turning Prayer Into Action: Indigenous Grandmothers Meet the Bioneers. Her next film will document the pilgrimages of the earth treasure vases in order to share the story and practice more widely.

Sign Zodiac and Star Zodiac: In the second talk John Lash details in simple language the difference between the two Zodiacs and proposes what he calls the genotype to contrast with the horoscope. Discussing tropical, sidereal, Vedic versions of astrology, he explains the implications of the true star zodiac (the circle of thirteen constellations), for our notion of destiny.

Destiny in the Stars 3

In the first talk John Lash describes his struggles and conflicts working as a consulting astrologer for 30 years, explaining what led him to formulate an alternative Zodiac based on observation of actual star-patterns. He points out why the word astrology is misleading, although astrology itself is valid on its own terms.

All talks refer to John’s book, Quest for the Zodiac recently reissued by the Marion Institute.
